eggs

I don't thing any other egg has looked so purpley. Odd isn't it? I opened the box to grab the eggs and then closed it to go get the camera.

Guinny

....as in Pen-Guinny. When we got them as chicks they where fuzzy and black like little penguin chicks. This is my girl who lays the monster jumbo eggs.

more egg photos.

This morning I was greeted by 3 identical smooth perfect pink eggs. Conversely, last night when I checked the egg box I was greeted by these three cuties. All radically different. Green, pink with white speckles, and tan with brown freckles. I really liked the way they looked together and I really like the way they photograph together; I'm back to thinking about making Easter cards. Maybe I'll use one of these photos.

This was the last egg laid today, laid this afternoon, by my best laying hen, Guinny.. (don't I sound like a chicken farmer for sure) She lays extra Jumbo eggs, and she's very consistent. At any rate, I have all of Guinny's eggs set aside to take to Grandpa. It's a small thing, but one I feel compelled to do.

photos from the fridge.

The fridge makes a heck of a good light box. Top shelf only other light source is the crummy ceiling fan light.

Why am I taking photos in my fridge anyway? Looky at my very first green egg!!! All my new chickens are supposed to lay a variety of colors. I get tan with brown speckles for one hen, green from another and everyone else lays peachy pink. No one lays blue. I think I need more chickens.. hubby thinks I'm nuts.

Primitive markings

dinosaur tracks.
...or chicken footprints in the snow. They have such a primitive look to them, they crack me up.

Comparative analysis

More eggs! I know that is what everyone wants to see. But I wanted a picture that would show the different sizes of the eggs. That white egg in the center is your average grade A large egg. Had to buy some eggs last week. No one was laying. Clockwise from the top. An egg from the new Chickens, smallest one they have laid, it has a nice dark color. Another two from the new Chickens, most are this size, notice none of them are green or blue. :( Next that larger medium brown egg, I don't know who laid it. I'm guessing from the size it was one of the Older chickens, if it was a new girl I bet it hurt! next is a nice light brown from a new girl, I think the whitest hen is laying those. it is almost the size of the store bought egg. That last egg at 9 o'clock in the picture, it is the very last egg the older "girls" laid before they quite laying, do you see how big it is compared to the store egg? they taste better too. ;)

Maybe when the weather gets nice I will get some nice pictures of the flock. They move like toddlers, darn hard to get good pictures of them.

mixed emotions

My newer, younger chickens have started to lay eggs. Hooray! They are supposed to be blue and green. Not pale brown. Boooo.

Chicken Portraits and gas prices

Chickens don't really take glamorous portraits, not that I find that surprising, but they are a lot like shooting toddlers, they are moving subjects. Out of 10 shots or the various girls we have, only this one came out. Barely. But isn't she cute? She should lay easter eggs. Blue or green tinted.Hoping this will last.
